![]() ![]() Things get really interesting when both players use the instant teleportation back and forth several times in a row, making for a fun tug-of-war dynamic. You can also use this to ping-pong enemies back and forth after an initial attack launches them into the air. With this simply executed move, you can instantly appear right behind your opponents just as they're about to throw a punch, giving you the upper hand. Instant teleportation can also have a significant impact on the momentum of the game. Certain characters, such as the Saiyans, can use the ki energy to turn into more powerful forms, too. ![]() Fully charged ki attacks aren't unbeatable, since a well-timed punch can cancel out the whole thing, but they're impressive looking and completely devastating when they land. Depending on how much ki you have charged up, your energy attacks can range from a puny yellow fireball to a time-stopping, screen-filling nightmare. Your ki will increase naturally over the course of a fight, but you can also hold down the L button to quickly charge up, though this will leave you extremely vulnerable to attacks. In addition to your standard life bar, there's a ki meter, which dictates what kinds of energy attacks you can throw. It's the ranged energy attacks that give Shin Budokai's gameplay such a distinctive flair. Holding down the block button puts your character's guard up, though well-timed taps on the block button can dodge an attack entirely or even throw an energy attack right back at your opponent. As you might expect, melee attacks can be easily strung into combos, and pressing both at once lets you throw your opponent. The game's controls map easily onto the PSP, using two of the face buttons for melee attacks, one for blocking attacks, and one for firing off ranged energy attacks. Like its predecessors, Shin Budokai takes a basic 3D fighting game model and imbues it with the hyperkinetic energy synonymous with Dragon Ball Z. That Shin Budokai takes its cues from the first three Budokai games, and not Budokai Tenkaichi, should be a great relief to fans. Ryu's fireballs have nothing on Goku's kamehameha wave. Shin Budokai's bare-bones set of features is in stark relief against the game's solid core and is a little disappointing. The simple, fast-paced action of the Budokai series translates well onto the PSP, and the presentation is both eye-catchingly vibrant and technically flashy. Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai brings Atari and Dimps' successful anime-inspired fighting series to the PlayStation Portable in a package that isn't particularly ambitious but is still well-executed enough to make it worthwhile. ![]() As well, he sells keys to unlock special levels in each world. At Cranky's shop, the player can buy balloons and boosts that will help the Kongs get through a level. The player can also collect bananas (collecting 100 gives the player a life balloon), banana coins (which are used at Cranky's shop), hearts and red life balloons. ![]() Once the level is beaten, the player can go back and do a timed speed run to beat the level to 100%. The player must collect the letters K, O, N, G as well as finding a variety of puzzle pieces. Each level has two sets of collectables to find. Player 2 can still use the peanut popgun to shoot enemies and can hop off anytime. When two players are gaming, Diddy can hop onto Donkey's back, giving player one full control over Diddy's jet pack and essentially functioning as one character. He also has a jet pack that allows him to hover. Nintendo was kind enough to give a secondary control option that only uses the Wiimote for those players who don't want or don't own nunchuks.ĭiddy's moves are the same as Donkey Kong's, except he uses his peanut popgun to do his ground pound and to attack enemies. Using either the Z or B button allows the player to grab and climb along grass or chains to find more secrets. The Kongs can also roll by holding either left or right and shaking. Crouching and shaking allows the player to blow the petals off a flower (to find hidden treasures) or cool off a fiery tiki-head so DK can smash 'em. This stuns nearby enemies, opens crates and treasure boxes and allows the player to interact with the environment. The player uses the joystick to control direction and shakes the Wiimote/nunchuk to pound the ground. The game uses both the Wiimote and the nunchuk. Rambi the Rhino is willing to cart the great ape around and the mine-cart levels are back and ready to drive you insane. Donkey Kong is accompanied by Diddy and Cranky Kong is still around, selling life balloons and dispensing with salty wisdom from his shop. The usual characters are back for another round. Unfortunately for our hero, that also includes his much-coveted (and oft-stolen) secret stash. They use their magical music to control the island's animals and command them to begin gathering all the bananas of the island. The game opens with a cutscene showing a band of musical tiki heads invading Donkey Kong Island after a volcanic eruption. That's why I was happy to discover that Donkey Kong Country Returns offers great gameplay, a decent storyline and the kind of graphics that Wii owners have been waiting for. He doesn't need drums or other peripherals and he doesn't need to be anyone's sidekick. I thoroughly enjoyed DKC and all of the sequels that followed, but I've never really gotten into the games that lumped DK together with Mario or another Nintendo character. Unfortunately, it seems like there hasn't been a really decent Donkey Kong game since then. Needless to say, I've been a fan of the franchise ever since. I forget which game she got, but I remember thinking I had gotten the better end of the deal. ![]() I can remember the Christmas morning when my sister and I unwrapped our brand new Super Nintendo. It made an odd clunk sound when you turned it on. I had been gaming for some time before then, but it was on an NES passed down through three cousins. That, and the myriad of collectables and hidden areas make for great replayability and therefore value for money. The original iteration of Donkey Kong Country was the first game I ever owned. This is classic platforming action and the relative shortness of the level design makes it perfect for the portable console. So he, with the occasional help of Diddy and Cranky, sets out to jump, roll, smash, swing and bounce his way to exact his own brand of vengeance. Donkey Kong is immune to their hypnosis and is none too happy about losing his primary food source. The Tiki Tak Tribe have hypnotised animals on the island into gathering all the bananas. ![]() This port of the Wii game has been beautifully adapted for the 3DS and although it still plays out in a 2D plane, the 3D effect breathes new life into this side-scrolling platformer. In Donkey Kong Country Returns they have once again proven that 3DS is a gaming platform not to be taken lightly. If there is one thing Nintendo has been showing us for the last year or so it's that solid gameplay wins over flashy gimmicks and graphics any day. Update with additional StereoImage viewer.
